           StepanArkadyevitchwasstandingatthetopofthestairs.Hisgood-naturedlybeamingfaceabovetheembroideredcollarofhisuniformbeamedmorethaneverwhenherecognizedthemancomingup.

           “Well,let’sgointomyroom,”saidStepanArkadyevitch,whoknewhisfriend’ssensitiveandirritableshyness,and,takinghisarm,hedrewhimalong,asthoughguidinghimthroughdangers.
