           AndLevinrememberedascenehehadlatelywitnessedbetweenDollyandherchildren.Thechildren,lefttothemselves,hadbeguncookingraspberriesoverthecandlesandsquirtingmilkintoeachother’smouthswithasyringe.Theirmother,catchingthematthesepranks,beganremindingtheminLevin’spresenceofthetroubletheirmischiefgavetothegrown-uppeople,andthatthistroublewasallfortheirsake,andthatiftheysmashedthecupstheywouldhavenothingtodrinktheirteaoutof,andthatiftheywastedthemilk,theywouldhavenothingtoeat,anddieofhunger.

           AndLevinhadbeenstruckbythepassive,wearyincredulitywithwhichthechildrenheardwhattheirmothersaidtothem.Theyweresimplyannoyedthattheiramusingplayhadbeeninterrupted,anddidnotbelieveawordofwhattheirmotherwassaying.Theycouldnotbelieveitindeed,fortheycouldnottakeintheimmensityofalltheyhabituallyenjoyed,andsocouldnotconceivethatwhattheyweredestroyingwastheverythingtheylivedby.

           “Thatallcomesofitself,”theythought,“andthere’snothinginterestingorimportantaboutitbecauseithasalwaysbeenso,andalwayswillbeso.Andit’sallalwaysthesame.We’venoneedtothinkaboutthat,it’sallready.Butwewanttoinventsomethingofourown,andnew.Sowethoughtofputtingraspberriesinacup,andcookingthemoveracandle,andsquirtingmilkstraightintoeachother’smouths.That’sfun,andsomethingnew,andnotabitworsethandrinkingoutofcups.
