           SergeyIvanovitchandKatavasovhadonlyjustreachedthestationoftheKurskline,whichwasparticularlybusyandfullofpeoplethatday,when,lookingroundforthegroomwhowasfollowingwiththeirthings,theysawapartyofvolunteersdrivingupinfourcabs.Ladiesmetthemwithbouquetsofflowers,andfollowedbytherushingcrowdtheywentintothestation.

           Oneoftheladies,whohadmetthevolunteers,cameoutofthehallandaddressedSergeyIvanovitch.

           “Youtoocometoseethemoff?”sheaskedinFrench.

           “No,I’mgoingawaymyself,princess.Tomybrother’sforaholiday.Doyoualwaysseethemoff?”saidSergeyIvanovitchwithahardlyperceptiblesmile.

           “Oh,thatwouldbeimpossible!”answeredtheprincess.“Isittruethateighthundredhavebeensentfromusalready?Malvinskywouldn’tbelieveme.”

           “Morethaneighthundred.IfyoureckonthosewhohavebeensentnotdirectlyfromMoscow,overathousand,”answeredSergeyIvanovitch.

           “There!That’sjustwhatIsaid!”exclaimedthelady.“Andit’struetoo,Isuppose,thatmorethanamillionhasbeensubscribed?”

           “Yes,princess.”

           “Whatdoyousaytotoday’stelegram?BeatentheTurksagain.”

           “Yes,soIsaw,”answeredSergeyIvanovitch.TheywerespeakingofthelasttelegramstatingthattheTurkshadbeenforthreedaysinsuccessionbeatenatallpointsandputtoflight,andthattomorrowadecisiveengagementwasexpected.

           “Ah,bytheway,asplendidyoungfellowhasaskedleavetogo,andthey’vemadesomedifficulty,Idon’tknowwhy.
