           WhenKittyhadgoneandLevinwasleftalone,hefeltsuchuneasinesswithouther,andsuchanimpatientlongingtogetasquickly,asquicklyaspossible,totomorrowmorning,whenhewouldseeheragainandbeplightedtoherforever,thathefeltafraid,asthoughofdeath,ofthosefourteenhoursthathehadtogetthroughwithouther.Itwasessentialforhimtobewithsomeonetotalkto,soasnottobeleftalone,tokilltime.StepanArkadyevitchwouldhavebeenthecompanionmostcongenialtohim,buthewasgoingout,hesaid,toasoirée,inrealitytotheballet.Levinonlyhadtimetotellhimhewashappy,andthathelovedhim,andwouldnever,neverforgetwhathehaddoneforhim.TheeyesandthesmileofStepanArkadyevitchshowedLevinthathecomprehendedthatfeelingfittingly.

           “Oh,soit’snottimetodieyet?”saidStepanArkadyevitch,pressingLevin’shandwithemotion.

           “N-n-no!”saidLevin.

           DaryaAlexandrovnatoo,asshesaidgood-byetohim,gavehimasortofcongratulation,saying,“HowgladIamyouhavemetKittyagain!Onemustvalueoldfriends.”LevindidnotlikethesewordsofDaryaAlexandrovna’s.Shecouldnotunderstandhowloftyandbeyondheritallwas,andsheoughtnottohavedaredtoalludetoit.Levinsaidgood-byetothem,but,nottobeleftalone,heattachedhimselftohisbrother.

           “Whereareyougoing?”

           “I’mgoingtoameeting.”

           “Well,I’llcomewithyou.MayI?”

           “Whatfor?Yes,comealong,”saidSergeyIvanovitch,smiling.
