           MashkinUplandwasmown,thelastrowfinished,thepeasantshadputontheircoatsandweregailytrudginghome.Levingotonhishorseand,partingregretfullyfromthepeasants,rodehomewards.Onthehillsidehelookedback;hecouldnotseetheminthemistthathadrisenfromthevalley;hecouldonlyhearrough,good-humoredvoices,laughter,andthesoundofclankingscythes.

           SergeyIvanovitchhadlongagofinisheddinner,andwasdrinkingicedlemonandwaterinhisownroom,lookingthroughthereviewsandpaperswhichhehadonlyjustreceivedbypost,whenLevinrushedintotheroom,talkingmerrily,withhiswetandmattedhairstickingtohisforehead,andhisbackandchestgrimedandmoist.

           “Wemowedthewholemeadow!Oh,itisnice,delicious!Andhowhaveyoubeengettingon?”saidLevin,completelyforgettingthedisagreeableconversationofthepreviousday.

           “Mercy!whatdoyoulooklike!”saidSergeyIvanovitch,forthefirstmomentlookingroundwithsomedissatisfaction.“Andthedoor,doshutthedoor!”hecried.“Youmusthaveletinadozenatleast.”

           SergeyIvanovitchcouldnotendureflies,andinhisownroomheneveropenedthewindowexceptatnight,andcarefullykeptthedoorshut.

           “Notone,onmyhonor.ButifIhave,I’llcatchthem.Youwouldn’tbelievewhatapleasureitis!Howhaveyouspenttheday?”

           “Verywell.Buthaveyoureallybeenmowingthewholeday?Iexpectyou’reashungryasawolf.Kouzmahasgoteverythingreadyforyou.”

           “No,Idon’tfeelhungryeven.Ihadsomethingtoeatthere.ButI’llgoandwash.
