           WhenOblonskyaskedLevinwhathadbroughthimtotown,Levinblushed,andwasfuriouswithhimselfforblushing,becausehecouldnotanswer,“Ihavecometomakeyoursister-in-lawanoffer,”thoughthatwaspreciselywhathehadcomefor.

           ThefamiliesoftheLevinsandtheShtcherbatskyswereold,nobleMoscowfamilies,andhadalwaysbeenonintimateandfriendlyterms.ThisintimacyhadgrownstillcloserduringLevin’sstudentdays.HehadbothpreparedfortheuniversitywiththeyoungPrinceShtcherbatsky,thebrotherofKittyandDolly,andhadenteredatthesametimewithhim.InthosedaysLevinusedoftentobeintheShtcherbatskys’house,andhewasinlovewiththeShtcherbatskyhousehold.Strangeasitmayappear,itwaswiththehousehold,thefamily,thatKonstantinLevinwasinlove,especiallywiththefemininehalfofthehousehold.Levindidnotrememberhisownmother,andhisonlysisterwasolderthanhewas,sothatitwasintheShtcherbatskys’housethathesawforthefirsttimethatinnerlifeofanold,noble,cultivated,andhonorablefamilyofwhichhehadbeendeprivedbythedeathofhisfatherandmother.Allthemembersofthatfamily,especiallythefemininehalf,werepicturedbyhim,asitwere,wrappedaboutwithamysteriouspoeticalveil,andhenotonlyperceivednodefectswhateverinthem,butunderthepoeticalveilthatshroudedthemheassumedtheexistenceoftheloftiestsentimentsandeverypossibleperfection.
