           KittymadetheacquaintanceofMadameStahltoo,andthisacquaintance,togetherwithherfriendshipwithVarenka,didnotmerelyexerciseagreatinfluenceonher,italsocomfortedherinhermentaldistress.Shefoundthiscomfortthroughacompletelynewworldbeingopenedtoherbymeansofthisacquaintance,aworldhavingnothingincommonwithherpast,anexalted,nobleworld,fromtheheightofwhichshecouldcontemplateherpastcalmly.ItwasrevealedtoherthatbesidestheinstinctivelifetowhichKittyhadgivenherselfuphithertotherewasaspirituallife.Thislifewasdisclosedinreligion,butareligionhavingnothingincommonwiththatonewhichKittyhadknownfromchildhood,andwhichfoundexpressioninlitaniesandall-nightservicesattheWidow’sHome,whereonemightmeetone’sfriends,andinlearningbyheartSlavonictextswiththepriest.Thiswasalofty,mysteriousreligionconnectedwithawholeseriesofnoblethoughtsandfeelings,whichonecoulddomorethanmerelybelievebecauseonewastoldto,whichonecouldlove.
