           Goingoutofthenurseryandbeingagainalone,Levinwentbackatoncetothethought,inwhichtherewassomethingnotclear.

           Insteadofgoingintothedrawing-room,whereheheardvoices,hestoppedontheterrace,andleaninghiselbowsontheparapet,hegazedupatthesky.

           Itwasquitedarknow,andinthesouth,wherehewaslooking,therewerenoclouds.Thestormhaddriftedontotheoppositesideofthesky,andtherewereflashesoflightninganddistantthunderfromthatquarter.Levinlistenedtothemonotonousdripfromthelimetreesinthegarden,andlookedatthetriangleofstarsheknewsowell,andtheMilkyWaywithitsbranchesthatranthroughitsmidst.AteachflashoflightningtheMilkyWay,andeventhebrightstars,vanished,butassoonasthelightningdiedaway,theyreappearedintheirplacesasthoughsomehandhadflungthembackwithcarefulaim.

           “Well,whatisitperplexesme?”Levinsaidtohimself,feelingbeforehandthatthesolutionofhisdifficultieswasreadyinhissoul,thoughhedidnotknowityet.“Yes,theoneunmistakable,incontestablemanifestationoftheDivinityisthelawofrightandwrong,whichhascomeintotheworldbyrevelation,andwhichIfeelinmyself,andintherecognitionofwhichIdon’tmakemyself,butwhetherIwillornotIammadeonewithothermeninonebodyofbelievers,whichiscalledthechurch.Well,buttheJews,theMohammedans,theConfucians,theBuddhistswhatofthem?”heputtohimselfthequestionhehadfearedtoface.
