           AttheendoftheeveningKittytoldhermotherofherconversationwithLevin,andinspiteofallthepityshefeltforLevin,shewasgladatthethoughtthatshehadreceivedanoffer.Shehadnodoubtthatshehadactedrightly.Butaftershehadgonetobed,foralongwhileshecouldnotsleep.Oneimpressionpursuedherrelentlessly.ItwasLevin’sface,withhisscowlingbrows,andhiskindeyeslookingoutindarkdejectionbelowthem,ashestoodlisteningtoherfather,andglancingatherandatVronsky.Andshefeltsosorryforhimthattearscameintohereyes.Butimmediatelyshethoughtofthemanforwhomshehadgivenhimup.Shevividlyrecalledhismanly,resoluteface,hisnobleself-possession,andthegoodnatureconspicuousineverythingtowardseveryone.Sherememberedtheloveforherofthemansheloved,andoncemoreallwasgladnessinhersoul,andshelayonthepillow,smilingwithhappiness.“I’msorry,I’msorry;butwhatcouldIdo?It’snotmyfault,”shesaidtoherself;butaninnervoicetoldhersomethingelse.WhethershefeltremorseathavingwonLevin’slove,orathavingrefusedhim,shedidnotknow.Butherhappinesswaspoisonedbydoubts.“Lord,havepityonus;Lord,havepityonus;Lord,havepityonus!”sherepeatedtoherself,tillshefellasleep.
