           AlthoughallVronsky’sinnerlifewasabsorbedinhispassion,hisexternallifeunalterablyandinevitablyfollowedalongtheoldaccustomedlinesofhissocialandregimentaltiesandinterests.TheinterestsofhisregimenttookanimportantplaceinVronsky’slife,bothbecausehewasfondoftheregiment,andbecausetheregimentwasfondofhim.TheywerenotonlyfondofVronskyinhisregiment,theyrespectedhimtoo,andwereproudofhim;proudthatthisman,withhisimmensewealth,hisbrillianteducationandabilities,andthepathopenbeforehimtoeverykindofsuccess,distinction,andambition,haddisregardedallthat,andofalltheinterestsoflifehadtheinterestsofhisregimentandhiscomradesnearesttohisheart.Vronskywasawareofhiscomrades’viewofhim,andinadditiontohislikingforthelife,hefeltboundtokeepupthatreputation.

           Itneednotbesaidthathedidnotspeakofhislovetoanyofhiscomrades,nordidhebetrayhissecreteveninthewildestdrinkingbouts(thoughindeedhewasneversodrunkastoloseallcontrolofhimself).Andheshutupanyofhisthoughtlesscomradeswhoattemptedtoalludetohisconnection.Butinspiteofthat,hislovewasknowntoallthetown;everyoneguessedwithmoreorlessconfidenceathisrelationswithMadameKarenina.ThemajorityoftheyoungermenenviedhimforjustwhatwasthemostirksomefactorinhislovetheexaltedpositionofKarenin,andtheconsequentpublicityoftheirconnectioninsociety.
