           OnthedayoftheracesatKrasnoeSelo,Vronskyhadcomeearlierthanusualtoeatbeefsteakinthecommonmessroomoftheregiment.Hehadnoneedtobestrictwithhimself,ashehadveryquicklybeenbroughtdowntotherequiredlightweight;butstillhehadtoavoidgainingflesh,andsoheeschewedfarinaceousandsweetdishes.Hesatwithhiscoatunbuttonedoverawhitewaistcoat,restingbothelbowsonthetable,andwhilewaitingforthesteakhehadorderedhelookedataFrenchnovelthatlayopenonhisplate.Hewasonlylookingatthebooktoavoidconversationwiththeofficerscominginandout;hewasthinking.

           HewasthinkingofAnna’spromisetoseehimthatdayaftertheraces.Buthehadnotseenherforthreedays,andasherhusbandhadjustreturnedfromabroad,hedidnotknowwhethershewouldbeabletomeethimtodayornot,andhedidnotknowhowtofindout.HehadhadhislastinterviewwithherathiscousinBetsy’ssummervilla.HevisitedtheKarenins’summervillaasrarelyaspossible.Nowhewantedtogothere,andheponderedthequestionhowtodoit.

           “OfcourseIshallsayBetsyhassentmetoaskwhethershe’scomingtotheraces.Ofcourse,I’llgo,”hedecided,liftinghisheadfromthebook.Andashevividlypicturedthehappinessofseeingher,hisfacelightedup.
