           ThecarryingoutofLevin’splanpresentedmanydifficulties;buthestruggledon,doinghisutmost,andattainedaresultwhich,thoughnotwhathedesired,wasenoughtoenablehim,withoutself-deception,tobelievethattheattemptwasworththetrouble.Oneofthechiefdifficultieswasthattheprocessofcultivatingthelandwasinfullswing,thatitwasimpossibletostopeverythingandbeginitallagainfromthebeginning,andthemachinehadtobemendedwhileinmotion.

           Whenontheeveningthathearrivedhomeheinformedthebailiffofhisplans,thelatterwithvisiblepleasureagreedwithwhathesaidsolongashewaspointingoutthatallthathadbeendoneuptothattimewasstupidanduseless.Thebailiffsaidthathehadsaidsoalongwhileago,butnoheedhadbeenpaidhim.ButasfortheproposalmadebyLevintotakeapartasshareholderwithhislaborersineachagriculturalundertakingatthisthebailiffsimplyexpressedaprofounddespondency,andofferednodefiniteopinion,butbeganimmediatelytalkingoftheurgentnecessityofcarryingtheremainingsheavesofryethenextday,andofsendingthemenoutforthesecondploughing,sothatLevinfeltthatthiswasnotthetimefordiscussingit.

           Onbeginningtotalktothepeasantsaboutit,andmakingapropositiontocedethemthelandonnewterms,hecameintocollisionwiththesamegreatdifficultythattheyweresomuchabsorbedbythecurrentworkoftheday,thattheyhadnottimetoconsidertheadvantagesanddisadvantagesoftheproposedscheme.
