           EveryonetookpartintheconversationexceptKittyandLevin.Atfirst,whentheyweretalkingoftheinfluencethatonepeoplehasonanother,thererosetoLevin’smindwhathehadtosayonthesubject.Buttheseideas,onceofsuchimportanceinhiseyes,seemedtocomeintohisbrainasinadream,andhadnownottheslightestinterestforhim.Itevenstruckhimasstrangethattheyshouldbesoeagertotalkofwhatwasofnousetoanyone.Kitty,too,should,onewouldhavesupposed,havebeeninterestedinwhattheyweresayingoftherightsandeducationofwomen.Howoftenshehadmusedonthesubject,thinkingofherfriendabroad,Varenka,ofherpainfulstateofdependence,howoftenshehadwonderedaboutherselfwhatwouldbecomeofherifshedidnotmarry,andhowoftenshehadarguedwithhersisteraboutit!Butitdidnotinterestheratall.SheandLevinhadaconversationoftheirown,yetnotaconversation,butsomesortofmysteriouscommunication,whichbroughtthemeverymomentnearer,andstirredinbothasenseofgladterrorbeforetheunknownintowhichtheywereentering.

           AtfirstLevin,inanswertoKitty’squestionhowhecouldhaveseenherlastyearinthecarriage,toldherhowhehadbeencominghomefromthemowingalongthehighroadandhadmether.
