           “Wehavelongbeenexpectingyou,”saidStepanArkadyevitch,goingintohisroomandlettingLevin’shandgoasthoughtoshowthatherealldangerwasover.“Iamvery,verygladtoseeyou,”hewenton.“Well,howareyou?Eh?Whendidyoucome?”

           Levinwassilent,lookingattheunknownfacesofOblonsky’stwocompanions,andespeciallyatthehandoftheelegantGrinevitch,whichhadsuchlongwhitefingers,suchlongyellowfilbert-shapednails,andsuchhugeshiningstudsontheshirt-cuff,thatapparentlytheyabsorbedallhisattention,andallowedhimnofreedomofthought.Oblonskynoticedthisatonce,andsmiled.
