13August. —Anotherquietday,andtobedwiththekeyonmywristasbefore. AgainIawokeinthenight,andfoundLucysittingupinbed,stillasleep,pointingtothewindow. Igotupquietly,andpullingasidetheblind,lookedout. Itwasbrilliantmoonlight,andthesofteffectofthelightovertheseaandsky,mergedtogetherinonegreatsilentmystery,wasbeautifulbeyondwords. Betweenmeandthemoonlightflittedagreatbat,comingandgoingingreatwhirlingcircles. Onceortwiceitcamequiteclose,butwas,Isuppose,frightenedatseeingme,andflittedawayacrosstheharbourtowardstheabbey. 14August. —OntheEastCliff,readingandwritingallday. LucyseemstohavebecomeasmuchinlovewiththespotasIam,anditishardtogetherawayfromitwhenitistimetocomehomeforlunchorteaordinner. Thisafternoonshemadeafunnyremark. Wewerecominghomefordinner,andhadcometothetopofthestepsupfromtheWestPierandstoppedtolookattheview,aswegenerallydo. Thesettingsun,lowdowninthesky,wasjustdroppingbehindKettleness. TheredlightwasthrownoverontheEastCliffandtheoldabbey,andseemedtobatheeverythinginabeautifulrosyglow. Weweresilentforawhile,andsuddenlyLucymurmuredasiftoherself...
