Dr. Seward’s Diary

           11October,Evening. JonathanHarkerhasaskedmetonotethis,ashesaysheishardlyequaltothetask,andhewantsanexactrecordkept. 

           IthinkthatnoneofusweresurprisedwhenwewereaskedtoseeMrs.Harkeralittlebeforethetimeofsunset. Wehaveoflatecometounderstandthatsunriseandsunsetaretohertimesofpeculiarfreedom. Whenheroldselfcanbemanifestwithoutanycontrollingforcesubduingorrestrainingher,orincitinghertoaction. Thismoodorconditionbeginssomehalfhourormorebeforeactualsunriseorsunset,andlaststilleitherthesunishigh,orwhilstthecloudsarestillaglowwiththeraysstreamingabovethehorizon. Atfirstthereisasortofnegativecondition,asifsometiewereloosened,andthentheabsolutefreedomquicklyfollows. When,however,thefreedomceasesthechangebackorrelapsecomesquickly,precededonlybyaspellofwarningsilence. 

           Tonight,whenwemet,shewassomewhatconstrained,andboreallthesignsofaninternalstruggle.Iputitdownmyselftohermakingaviolenteffortattheearliestinstantshecoulddoso. 

           Averyfewminutes,however,gavehercompletecontrolofherself. Then,motioningherhusbandtositbesideheronthesofawhereshewashalfreclining,shemadetherestofusbringchairsupclose. 

           Takingherhusband’shandinhers,shebegan, "Weareallheretogetherinfreedom,forperhapsthelasttime! Iknowthatyouwillalwaysbewithmetotheend." Thiswastoherhusbandwhosehandhad,aswecouldsee,tighteneduponher.
