           Aftermanyinquiriesandalmostasmanyrefusals,andperpetuallyusingthewords ‘PALLMALLGAZETTE’ asasortoftalisman,ImanagedtofindthekeeperofthesectionoftheZoologicalGardensinwhichthewolfdepartmentisincluded. ThomasBilderlivesinoneofthecottagesintheenclosurebehindtheelephanthouse,andwasjustsittingdowntohisteawhenIfoundhim. Thomasandhiswifearehospitablefolk,elderly,andwithoutchildren,andifthespecimenIenjoyedoftheirhospitalitybeoftheaveragekind,theirlivesmustbeprettycomfortable. Thekeeperwouldnotenteronwhathecalledbusinessuntilthesupperwasover,andwewereallsatisfied. Thenwhenthetablewascleared,andhehadlithispipe,hesaid, 

           "Now,Sir,youcangoonandarskmewhatyouwant. You’llexcoosemerefoosin’totalkofperfeshunalsubjuctsaforemeals. IgivesthewolvesandthejackalsandthehyenasinalloursectiontheirteaaforeIbeginstoarskthemquestions." 

           "Howdoyoumean,askthemquestions?"Iqueried,wishfultogethimintoatalkativehumor. 

           "‘Ittin’ofthemoverthe‘eadwithapoleisoneway. Scratchin’oftheirearsinanother,whengentsasisflushwantsabitofashow-orftotheirgals. Idon’tsomuchmindthefust,the‘ittinofthepolepartaforeIchucksintheirdinner,butIwaitstillthey’ve‘adtheirsherryandkawffee,sotospeak,aforeItriesonwiththeearscratchin’. Mindyou,"headdedphilosophically,"there’sadealofthesamenatureinusasinthemtheeranimiles.
