           5October. Weallaroseearly,andIthinkthatsleepdidmuchforeachandallofus. Whenwemetatearlybreakfasttherewasmoregeneralcheerfulnessthananyofushadeverexpectedtoexperienceagain. 

           Itisreallywonderfulhowmuchresiliencethereisinhumannature. Letanyobstructingcause,nomatterwhat,beremovedinanyway,evenbydeath,andweflybacktofirstprinciplesofhopeandenjoyment. Morethanonceaswesataroundthetable,myeyesopenedinwonderwhetherthewholeofthepastdayshadnotbeenadream. ItwasonlywhenIcaughtsightoftheredblotchonMrs.Harker’sforeheadthatIwasbroughtbacktoreality. Evennow,whenIamgravelyrevolvingthematter,itisalmostimpossibletorealizethatthecauseofallourtroubleisstillexistent. EvenMrs.Harkerseemstolosesightofhertroubleforwholespells.Itisonlynowandagain,whensomethingrecallsittohermind,thatshethinksofherterriblescar. Wearetomeethereinmystudyinhalfanhouranddecideonourcourseofaction. Iseeonlyoneimmediatedifficulty,Iknowitbyinstinctratherthanreason.Weshallallhavetospeakfrankly.AndyetIfearthatinsomemysteriouswaypoorMrs.Harker’stongueistied. Iknowthatsheformsconclusionsofherown,andfromallthathasbeenIcanguesshowbrilliantandhowtruetheymustbe. Butshewillnot,orcannot,givethemutterance. IhavementionedthistoVanHelsing,andheandIaretotalkitoverwhenwearealone.
