           1October,evening. IfoundThomasSnellinginhishouseatBethnalGreen,butunhappilyhewasnotinaconditiontorememberanything. Theveryprospectofbeerwhichmyexpectedcominghadopenedtohimhadprovedtoomuch,andhehadbeguntooearlyonhisexpecteddebauch. Ilearned,however,fromhiswife,whoseemedadecent,poorsoul,thathewasonlytheassistantofSmollet,whoofthetwomateswastheresponsibleperson. SooffIdrovetoWalworth,andfoundMr.JosephSmolletathomeandinhisshirtsleeves,takingalateteaoutofasaucer. Heisadecent,intelligentfellow,distinctlyagood,reliabletypeofworkman,andwithaheadpieceofhisown. Herememberedallabouttheincidentoftheboxes,andfromawonderfuldog-earednotebook,whichheproducedfromsomemysteriousreceptacleabouttheseatofhistrousers,andwhichhadhieroglyphicalentriesinthick,half-obliteratedpencil,hegavemethedestinationsoftheboxes. Therewere,hesaid,sixinthecartloadwhichhetookfromCarfaxandleftat197ChicksandStreet,MileEndNewTown,andanothersixwhichhedepositedatJamaicaLane,Bermondsey. IfthentheCountmeanttoscattertheseghastlyrefugesofhisoverLondon,theseplaceswerechosenasthefirstofdelivery,sothatlaterhemightdistributemorefully. ThesystematicmannerinwhichthiswasdonemademethinkthathecouldnotmeantoconfinehimselftotwosidesofLondon. Hewasnowfixedonthefareastonthenorthernshore,ontheeastofthesouthernshore,andonthesouth.
