           29October. ThisiswritteninthetrainfromVarnatoGalatz. Lastnightweallassembledalittlebeforethetimeofsunset. Eachofushaddonehisworkaswellashecould,sofarasthought,andendeavour,andopportunitygo,wearepreparedforthewholeofourjourney,andforourworkwhenwegettoGalatz. WhentheusualtimecameroundMrs.Harkerpreparedherselfforherhypnoticeffort,andafteralongerandmoreseriouseffortonthepartofVanHelsingthanhasbeenusuallynecessary,shesankintothetrance. Usuallyshespeaksonahint,butthistimetheProfessorhadtoaskherquestions,andtoaskthemprettyresolutely,beforewecouldlearnanything.Atlastheranswercame.

           Hereshestopped. Shehadrisen,asifimpulsively,fromwhereshelayonthesofa,andraisedbothherhands,palmsupwards,asifliftingaweight. VanHelsingandIlookedateachotherwithunderstanding. Quinceyraisedhiseyebrowsslightlyandlookedatherintently,whilstHarker’shandinstinctivelyclosedroundthehiltofhisKukri. Therewasalongpause.
