           AHampsteadMystery 

           TheneighborhoodofHampsteadisjustatpresentexercisedwithaseriesofeventswhichseemtorunonlinesparalleltothoseofwhatwasknowntothewritersofheadlinesas"TheKensingtonHorror,"or"TheStabbingWoman,"or"TheWomaninBlack." DuringthepasttwoorthreedaysseveralcaseshaveoccurredofyoungchildrenstrayingfromhomeorneglectingtoreturnfromtheirplayingontheHeath. Inallthesecasesthechildrenweretooyoungtogiveanyproperlyintelligibleaccountofthemselves,buttheconsensusoftheirexcusesisthattheyhadbeenwitha"blooferlady." Ithasalwaysbeenlateintheeveningwhentheyhavebeenmissed,andontwooccasionsthechildrenhavenotbeenfounduntilearlyinthefollowingmorning. Itisgenerallysupposedintheneighborhoodthat,asthefirstchildmissedgaveashisreasonforbeingawaythata"blooferlady"hadaskedhimtocomeforawalk,theothershadpickedupthephraseanduseditasoccasionserved. Thisisthemorenaturalasthefavouritegameofthelittleonesatpresentisluringeachotherawaybywiles. Acorrespondentwritesusthattoseesomeofthetinytotspretendingtobethe"blooferlady"issupremelyfunny.Someofourcaricaturistsmight,hesays,takealessonintheironyofgrotesquebycomparingtherealityandthepicture.Itisonlyinaccordancewithgeneralprinciplesofhumannaturethatthe"blooferlady"shouldbethepopularroleatthesealfrescoperformances. OurcorrespondentnaivelysaysthatevenEllenTerrycouldnotbesowinninglyattractiveassomeofthesegrubby-facedlittlechildrenpretend,andevenimaginethemselves,tobe. 

           Thereis,however,possiblyaserioussidetothequestion,forsomeofthechildren,indeedallwhohavebeenmissedatnight,havebeenslightlytornorwoundedinthethroat.
