6November. —ItwaslateintheafternoonwhentheProfessorandItookourwaytowardstheeastwhenceIknewJonathanwascoming. Wedidnotgofast,thoughthewaywassteeplydownhill,forwehadtotakeheavyrugsandwrapswithus. ForweweresodeepunderthehillwhereonitwassetthattheangleofperspectiveoftheCarpathianmountainswasfarbelowit. Wesawitinallitsgrandeur,perchedathousandfeetonthesummitofasheerprecipice,andwithseeminglyagreatgapbetweenitandthesteepoftheadjacentmountainonanyside. Therewassomethingwildanduncannyabouttheplace.
