           Anotherdisappointmentandhappysurprisecameintheirquarrels.Levincouldneverhaveconceivedthatbetweenhimandhiswifeanyrelationscouldariseotherthantender,respectfulandloving,andallatonceintheveryearlydaystheyquarreled,sothatshesaidhedidnotcareforher,thathecaredfornoonebuthimself,burstintotears,andwrungherarms.

           ThisfirstquarrelarosefromLevin’shavinggoneouttoanewfarmhouseandhavingbeenawayhalfanhourtoolong,becausehehadtriedtogethomebyashortcutandhadlosthisway.Hedrovehomethinkingofnothingbuther,ofherlove,ofhisownhappiness,andthenearerhedrewtohome,thewarmerwashistendernessforher.Heranintotheroomwiththesamefeeling,withanevenstrongerfeelingthanhehadhadwhenhereachedtheShtcherbatskys’housetomakehisoffer.Andsuddenlyhewasmetbyaloweringexpressionhehadneverseeninher.Hewouldhavekissedher;shepushedhimaway.

           “Whatisit?”
