           Hesawhowtheoldcooksmiled,admiringher,andlisteningtoherinexperienced,impossibleorders,howmournfullyandtenderlyAgafeaMihalovnashookherheadovertheyoungmistress’snewarrangements.HesawthatKittywasextraordinarilysweetwhen,laughingandcrying,shecametotellhimthathermaid,Masha,wasusedtolookinguponherasheryounglady,andsonooneobeyedher.Itseemedtohimsweet,butstrange,andhethoughtitwouldhavebeenbetterwithoutthis.

           Hedidnotknowhowgreatasenseofchangeshewasexperiencing;she,whoathomehadsometimeswantedsomefavoritedish,orsweets,withoutthepossibilityofgettingeither,nowcouldorderwhatsheliked,buypoundsofsweets,spendasmuchmoneyassheliked,andorderanypuddingsshepleased.

           ShewasdreamingwithdelightnowofDolly’scomingtothemwithherchildren,especiallybecauseshewouldorderforthechildrentheirfavoritepuddingsandDollywouldappreciateallhernewhousekeeping.Shedidnotknowherselfwhyandwherefore,butthearrangingofherhousehadanirresistibleattractionforher.Instinctivelyfeelingtheapproachofspring,andknowingthattherewouldbedaysofroughweathertoo,shebuilthernestasbestshecould,andwasinhasteatthesametimetobuilditandtolearnhowtodoit.

           ThiscarefordomesticdetailsinKitty,soopposedtoLevin’sidealofexaltedhappiness,wasatfirstoneofthedisappointments;andthissweetcareofherhousehold,theaimofwhichhedidnotunderstand,butcouldnothelploving,wasoneofthenewhappysurprises.
