           “Whatisshelike,whatisshelike?Likewhatsheusedtobe,orlikewhatshewasinthecarriage?WhatifDaryaAlexandrovnatoldthetruth?Whyshouldn’titbethetruth?”hethought.

           “Oh,please,introducemetoKarenin,”hebroughtoutwithaneffort,andwithadesperatelydeterminedstephewalkedintothedrawing-roomandbeheldher.

           Shewasnotthesameassheusedtobe,norwassheasshehadbeeninthecarriage;shewasquitedifferent.

           Shewasscared,shy,shame-faced,andstillmorecharmingfromit.Shesawhimtheveryinstanthewalkedintotheroom.Shehadbeenexpectinghim.
