           Andwhilehedidthishekeptlookingaboutandwatchingwhatcameintohisview:atonemomenthepickedawildberryandateitorofferedittoLevin,thenheflungawayatwigwiththebladeofthescythe,thenhelookedataquail’snest,fromwhichthebirdflewjustunderthescythe,orcaughtasnakethatcrossedhispath,andliftingitonthescytheasthoughonaforkshowedittoLevinandthrewitaway.

           ForbothLevinandtheyoungpeasantbehindhim,suchchangesofpositionweredifficult.Bothofthem,repeatingoverandoveragainthesamestrainedmovement,wereinaperfectfrenzyoftoil,andwereincapableofshiftingtheirpositionandatthesametimewatchingwhatwasbeforethem.

           Levindidnotnoticehowtimewaspassing.Ifhehadbeenaskedhowlonghehadbeenworkinghewouldhavesaidhalfanhouranditwasgettingonfordinnertime.Astheywerewalkingbackoverthecutgrass,theoldmancalledLevin’sattentiontothelittlegirlsandboyswhowerecomingfromdifferentdirections,hardlyvisiblethroughthelonggrass,andalongtheroadtowardsthemowers,carryingsacksofbreaddraggingattheirlittlehandsandpitchersofthesourrye-beer,withclothswrappedroundthem.

           “Look’ee,thelittleemmetscrawling!”hesaid,pointingtothem,andheshadedhiseyeswithhishandtolookatthesun.Theymowedtwomorerows;theoldmanstopped.

           “Come,master,dinnertime!”hesaidbriskly.
