           Kittymentionedthenamesofallthepeopletheymet,withsomeofwhomshewasacquaintedandsomenot.Attheentranceofthegardentheymettheblindlady,MadameBerthe,withherguide,andtheprincewasdelightedtoseetheoldFrenchwoman’sfacelightupwhensheheardKitty’svoice.SheatoncebegantalkingtohimwithFrenchexaggeratedpoliteness,applaudinghimforhavingsuchadelightfuldaughter,extollingKittytotheskiesbeforeherface,andcallingheratreasure,apearl,andaconsolingangel.

           “Well,she’sthesecondangel,then,”saidtheprince,smiling.“shecallsMademoiselleVarenkaangelnumberone.”

           “Oh!MademoiselleVarenka,she’sarealangel,allez,”MadameBertheassented.

           InthearcadetheymetVarenkaherself.Shewaswalkingrapidlytowardsthemcarryinganelegantredbag.

           “Hereispapacome,”Kittysaidtoher.

           Varenkamadesimplyandnaturallyasshedideverythingamovementbetweenabowandacurtsey,andimmediatelybegantalkingtotheprince,withoutshyness,naturally,asshetalkedtoeveryone.

           “Maman’shere,”shesaid,turningtoKitty.“Shehasnotsleptallnight,andthedoctoradvisedhertogoout.I’mtakingherherwork.”

           “Sothat’sangelnumberone?”saidtheprincewhenVarenkahadgoneon.

           KittysawthatherfatherhadmeanttomakefunofVarenka,butthathecouldnotdoitbecausehelikedher.
