           Thedayafterhisarrivaltheprince,inhislongovercoat,withhisRussianwrinklesandbaggycheeksproppedupbyastarchedcollar,setoffwithhisdaughtertothespringinthegreatestgoodhumor.

           Itwasalovelymorning:thebright,cheerfulhouseswiththeirlittlegardens,thesightofthered-faced,red-armed,beer-drinkingGermanwaitresses,workingawaymerrily,didtheheartgood.Butthenearertheygottothespringstheoftenertheymetsickpeople;andtheirappearanceseemedmorepitiablethaneveramongtheeverydayconditionsofprosperousGermanlife.Kittywasnolongerstruckbythiscontrast.Thebrightsun,thebrilliantgreenofthefoliage,thestrainsofthemusicwereforherthenaturalsettingofallthesefamiliarfaces,withtheirchangestogreateremaciationortoconvalescence,forwhichshewatched.ButtotheprincethebrightnessandgaietyoftheJunemorning,andthesoundoftheorchestraplayingagaywaltztheninfashion,andaboveall,theappearanceofthehealthyattendants,seemedsomethingunseemlyandmonstrous,inconjunctionwiththeseslowlymoving,dyingfiguresgatheredtogetherfromallpartsofEurope.Inspiteofhisfeelingofprideand,asitwere,ofthereturnofyouth,withhisfavoritedaughteronhisarm,hefeltawkward,andalmostashamedofhisvigorousstepandhissturdy,stoutlimbs.Hefeltalmostlikeamannotdressedinacrowd.

           “Presentmetoyournewfriends,”hesaidtohisdaughter,squeezingherhandwithhiselbow.“IlikeevenyourhorridSodenformakingyousowellagain.Onlyit’smelancholy,verymelancholyhere.
