           “Well,youcango,”answeredtheprincess,gazingatherdaughter’sembarrassedfaceandtryingtoguessthecauseofherembarrassment.

           ThatdayVarenkacametodinnerandtoldthemthatAnnaPavlovnahadchangedhermindandgivenuptheexpeditionforthemorrow.AndtheprincessnoticedagainthatKittyreddened.

           “Kitty,haven’tyouhadsomemisunderstandingwiththePetrovs?”saidtheprincess,whentheywereleftalone.“Whyhasshegivenupsendingthechildrenandcomingtoseeus?”

           Kittyansweredthatnothinghadhappenedbetweenthem,andthatshecouldnottellwhyAnnaPavlovnaseemeddispleasedwithher.Kittyansweredperfectlytruly.ShedidnotknowthereasonAnnaPavlovnahadchangedtoher,butsheguessedit.Sheguessedatsomethingwhichshecouldnottellhermother,whichshedidnotputintowordstoherself.Itwasoneofthosethingswhichoneknowsbutwhichonecanneverspeakofeventooneself,soterribleandshamefulwoulditbetobemistaken.

           Againandagainshewentoverinhermemoryallherrelationswiththefamily.Sherememberedthesimpledelightexpressedontheround,good-humoredfaceofAnnaPavlovnaattheirmeetings;sherememberedtheirsecretconfabulationsabouttheinvalid,theirplotstodrawhimawayfromtheworkwhichwasforbiddenhim,andtogethimout-of-doors;thedevotionoftheyoungestboy,whousedtocallher“myKitty,”andwouldnotgotobedwithouther.
