           Allthiswaswellenough,andtheprincesshadnothingtosayagainstit,especiallyasPetrov’swifewasaperfectlynicesortofwoman,andthattheGermanprincess,noticingKitty’sdevotion,praisedher,callingheranangelofconsolation.Allthiswouldhavebeenverywell,iftherehadbeennoexaggeration.Buttheprincesssawthatherdaughterwasrushingintoextremes,andsoindeedshetoldher.

           “Ilnefautjamaisrienoutrer,”shesaidtoher.

           Herdaughtermadehernoreply,onlyinherheartshethoughtthatonecouldnottalkaboutexaggerationwhereChristianitywasconcerned.Whatexaggerationcouldtherebeinthepracticeofadoctrinewhereinonewasbiddentoturntheothercheekwhenonewassmitten,andgiveone’scloakifone’scoatweretaken?Buttheprincessdislikedthisexaggeration,anddislikedevenmorethefactthatshefeltherdaughterdidnotcaretoshowherallherheart.Kittydidinfactconcealhernewviewsandfeelingsfromhermother.Sheconcealedthemnotbecauseshedidnotrespectordidnotlovehermother,butsimplybecauseshewashermother.Shewouldhaverevealedthemtoanyonesoonerthantohermother.

           “HowisitAnnaPavlovna’snotbeentoseeusforsolong?”theprincesssaidonedayofMadamePetrova.“I’veaskedher,butsheseemsputoutaboutsomething.”

           “No,I’venotnoticedit,maman,”saidKitty,flushinghotly.

           “Isitlongsinceyouwenttoseethem?”

           “We’remeaningtomakeanexpeditiontothemountainstomorrow,”answeredKitty.
