           Therewasthereportoffourshots,andlikeswallowsthesnipeturnedswiftsomersaultsintheairandvanishedfromsight.

           Thestand-shootingwascapital.StepanArkadyevitchshottwomorebirdsandLevintwo,ofwhichonewasnotfound.Itbegantogetdark.Venus,brightandsilvery,shonewithhersoftlightlowdowninthewestbehindthebirchtrees,andhighupintheeasttwinkledtheredlightsofArcturus.OverhisheadLevinmadeoutthestarsoftheGreatBearandlostthemagain.Thesnipehadceasedflying;butLevinresolvedtostayalittlelonger,tillVenus,whichhesawbelowabranchofbirch,shouldbeaboveit,andthestarsoftheGreatBearshouldbeperfectlyplain.Venushadrisenabovethebranch,andtheearoftheGreatBearwithitsshaftwasnowallplainlyvisibleagainstthedarkbluesky,yetstillhewaited.

           “Isn’tittimetogohome?”saidStepanArkadyevitch.

           Itwasquitestillnowinthecopse,andnotabirdwasstirring.

           “Let’sstayalittlewhile,”answeredLevin.

           “Asyoulike.”

           Theywerestandingnowaboutfifteenpacesfromoneanother.

           “Stiva!”saidLevinunexpectedly;“howisityoudon’ttellmewhetheryoursister-in-law’smarriedyet,orwhenshe’sgoingtobe?”

           Levinfeltsoresoluteandserenethatnoanswer,hefancied,couldaffecthim.ButhehadneverdreamedofwhatStepanArkadyevitchreplied.

           “She’sneverthoughtofbeingmarried,andisn’tthinkingofit;butshe’sveryill,andthedoctorshavesentherabroad.They’repositivelyafraidshemaynotlive.”

           “What!”criedLevin
