           Levinlookedabouthimtorightandtoleft,andthere,justfacinghimagainsttheduskyblueskyabovetheconfusedmassoftendershootsoftheaspens,hesawtheflyingbird.Itwasflyingstraighttowardshim;thegutturalcry,liketheeventearingofsomestrongstuff,soundedclosetohisear;thelongbeakandneckofthebirdcouldbeseen,andattheveryinstantwhenLevinwastakingaim,behindthebushwhereOblonskystood,therewasaflashofredlightning:thebirddroppedlikeanarrow,anddartedupwardsagain.Againcametheredflashandthesoundofablow,andflutteringitswingsasthoughtryingtokeepupintheair,thebirdhalted,stoppedstillaninstant,andfellwithaheavysplashontheslushyground.

           “CanIhavemissedit?”shoutedStepanArkadyevitch,whocouldnotseeforthesmoke.

           “Hereitis!”saidLevin,pointingtoLaska,whowithoneearraised,waggingtheendofhershaggytail,cameslowlybackasthoughshewouldprolongthepleasure,andasitweresmiling,broughtthedeadbirdtohermaster.“Well,I’mgladyouweresuccessful,”saidLevin,who,atthesametime,hadasenseofenvythathehadnotsucceededinshootingthesnipe.

           “Itwasabadshotfromtherightbarrel,”respondedStepanArkadyevitch,loadinghisgun.“Sh...it’sflying!”

           Theshrillwhistlesrapidlyfollowingoneanotherwereheardagain.Twosnipe,playingandchasingoneanother,andonlywhistling,notcrying,flewstraightattheveryheadsofthesportsmen.
