           Butwhenhecamebackfromthedoctor’sandsawhersufferingsagain,hefelltorepeatingmoreandmorefrequently:“Lord,havemercyonus,andsuccorus!”Hesighed,andflunghisheadup,andbegantofeelafraidhecouldnotbearit,thathewouldburstintotearsorrunaway.Suchagonyitwastohim.Andonlyonehourhadpassed.

           Butafterthathourtherepassedanotherhour,twohours,three,thefullfivehourshehadfixedasthefurthestlimitofhissufferings,andthepositionwasstillunchanged;andhewasstillbearingitbecausetherewasnothingtobedonebutbearit;everyinstantfeelingthathehadreachedtheutmostlimitsofhisendurance,andthathisheartwouldbreakwithsympathyandpain.

           Butstilltheminutespassedbyandthehours,andstillhoursmore,andhismiseryandhorrorgrewandweremoreandmoreintense.

           Alltheordinaryconditionsoflife,withoutwhichonecanformnoconceptionofanything,hadceasedtoexistforLevin.Helostallsenseoftime.Minutesthoseminuteswhenshesentforhimandheheldhermoisthand,thatwouldsqueezehishandwithextraordinaryviolenceandthenpushitawayseemedtohimhours,andhoursseemedtohimminutes.HewassurprisedwhenLizavetaPetrovnaaskedhimtolightacandlebehindascreen,andhefoundthatitwasfiveo’clockintheafternoon.Ifhehadbeentolditwasonlyteno’clockinthemorning,hewouldnothavebeenmoresurprised.Wherehewasallthistime,heknewaslittleasthetimeofanything.Hesawherswollenface,sometimesbewilderedandinagony,sometimessmilingandtryingtoreassurehim.
