           “Oh,formercy’ssake!”

           “Well,letmedrinkmycoffee,anyway.”

           Thedoctorstarteduponhiscoffee.Bothweresilent.

           “TheTurksarereallygettingbeaten,though.Didyoureadyesterday’stelegrams?”saidthedoctor,munchingsomeroll.

           “No,Ican’tstandit!”saidLevin,jumpingup.“Soyou’llbewithusinaquarterofanhour.”

           “Inhalfanhour.”

           “Onyourhonor?”

           WhenLevingothome,hedroveupatthesametimeastheprincess,andtheywentuptothebedroomdoortogether.Theprincesshadtearsinhereyes,andherhandswereshaking.SeeingLevin,sheembracedhim,andburstintotears.

           “Well,mydearLizavetaPetrovna?”shequeried,claspingthehandofthemidwife,whocameouttomeetthemwithabeamingandanxiousface.

           “She’sgoingonwell,”shesaid;“persuadehertoliedown.Shewillbeeasierso.”

           Fromthemomentwhenhehadwakedupandunderstoodwhatwasgoingon,Levinhadpreparedhismindtobearresolutelywhatwasbeforehim,andwithoutconsideringoranticipatinganything,toavoidupsettinghiswife,andonthecontrarytosootheherandkeepuphercourage.Withoutallowinghimselfeventothinkofwhatwastocome,ofhowitwouldend,judgingfromhisinquiriesastotheusualdurationoftheseordeals,Levinhadinhisimaginationbracedhimselftobearupandtokeepatightreinonhisfeelingsforfivehours,andithadseemedtohimhecoulddothis.
