           Icouldseealongthefloor,inthebrilliantmoonlight,myownfootstepsmarkedwhereIhaddisturbedthelongaccumulationofdust. Inthemoonlightoppositemewerethreeyoungwomen,ladiesbytheirdressandmanner. IthoughtatthetimethatImustbedreamingwhenIsawthem,theythrewnoshadowonthefloor. Theycameclosetome,andlookedatmeforsometime,andthenwhisperedtogether. Twoweredark,andhadhighaquilinenoses,liketheCount,andgreatdark,piercingeyes,thatseemedtobealmostredwhencontrastedwiththepaleyellowmoon. Theotherwasfair,asfairascanbe,withgreatmassesofgoldenhairandeyeslikepalesapphires. Iseemedsomehowtoknowherface,andtoknowitinconnectionwithsomedreamyfear,butIcouldnotrecollectatthemomenthoworwhere. Allthreehadbrilliantwhiteteeththatshonelikepearlsagainsttherubyoftheirvoluptuouslips. Therewassomethingaboutthemthatmademeuneasy,somelongingandatthesametimesomedeadlyfear. Ifeltinmyheartawicked,burningdesirethattheywouldkissmewiththoseredlips. Itisnotgoodtonotethisdown,lestsomedayitshouldmeetMina’seyesandcauseherpain,butitisthetruth. Theywhisperedtogether,andthentheyallthreelaughed,suchasilvery,musicallaugh,butashardasthoughthesoundnevercouldhavecomethroughthesoftnessofhumanlips. Itwasliketheintolerable,tinglingsweetnessofwaterglasseswhenplayedonbyacunninghand. Thefairgirlshookherheadcoquettishly,andtheothertwourgedheron. 

           Onesaid,"Goon!Youarefirst,andweshallfollow.Yoursistherighttobegin." 

           Theotheradded, "Heisyoungandstrong.Therearekissesforusall."
