           Justoutside,stretchedonamattress,layMr.Morris,wideawake. Heraisedawarninghandforsilenceashewhisperedtome, "Hush!Gobacktobed.Itisallright. Oneofuswillbehereallnight.Wedon’tmeantotakeanychances!" 

           Hislookandgestureforbadediscussion,soIcamebackandtoldMina. Shesighedandpositivelyashadowofasmilestoleoverherpoor,palefaceassheputherarmsroundmeandsaidsoftly, "Oh,thankGodforgoodbravemen!" Withasighshesankbackagaintosleep. IwritethisnowasIamnotsleepy,thoughImusttryagain. 

           4October,morning. OnceagainduringthenightIwaswakenedbyMina. Thistimewehadallhadagoodsleep,forthegreyofthecomingdawnwasmakingthewindowsintosharpoblongs,andthegasflamewaslikeaspeckratherthanadiscoflight. 

           Shesaidtomehurriedly,"Go,calltheProfessor. Iwanttoseehimatonce." 

           "Why?"Iasked. 

           "Ihaveanidea. Isupposeitmusthavecomeinthenight,andmaturedwithoutmyknowingit. Hemusthypnotizemebeforethedawn,andthenIshallbeabletospeak. Goquick,dearest,thetimeisgettingclose."
