           Thepoordeargrewwhiteasdeath,andshookandshivered,asIhaveseenaquicksandshakeandshiverattheincomingofthetide. Wewereallsilent. Wecoulddonothing. Atlengthshegrewmorecalmandturningtohimsaidsweetly,butohsosorrowfully,assheheldoutherhand, "Ipromiseyou,mydearfriend,thatifGodwillletmelive,Ishallstrivetodoso. Till,ifitmaybeinHisgoodtime,thishorrormayhavepassedawayfromme." 

           Shewassogoodandbravethatweallfeltthatourheartswerestrengthenedtoworkandendureforher,andwebegantodiscusswhatweweretodo. Itoldherthatshewastohaveallthepapersinthesafe,andallthepapersordiariesandphonographswemighthereafteruse,andwastokeeptherecordasshehaddonebefore. Shewaspleasedwiththeprospectofanythingtodo,if"pleased"couldbeusedinconnectionwithsogrimaninterest. 

           AsusualVanHelsinghadthoughtaheadofeveryoneelse,andwaspreparedwithanexactorderingofourwork.
