           Ihadtohurrybreakfast,forthetrainstartedalittlebeforeeight,orratheritoughttohavedoneso,forafterrushingtothestationat7:30Ihadtositinthecarriageformorethananhourbeforewebegantomove. 

           Itseemstomethatthefurthereastyougothemoreunpunctualarethetrains. WhatoughttheytobeinChina? 

           Alldaylongweseemedtodawdlethroughacountrywhichwasfullofbeautyofeverykind. Sometimeswesawlittletownsorcastlesonthetopofsteephillssuchasweseeinoldmissals; sometimesweranbyriversandstreamswhichseemedfromthewidestonymarginoneachsideofthemtobesubjecttogreatfloods. Ittakesalotofwater,andrunningstrong,tosweeptheoutsideedgeofariverclear. 

           Ateverystationthereweregroupsofpeople,sometimescrowds,andinallsortsofattire. SomeofthemwerejustlikethepeasantsathomeorthoseIsawcomingthroughFranceandGermany,withshortjackets,androundhats,andhome-madetrousers;butotherswereverypicturesque. 

           Thewomenlookedpretty,exceptwhenyougotnearthem,buttheywereveryclumsyaboutthewaist. Theyhadallfullwhitesleevesofsomekindorother,andmostofthemhadbigbeltswithalotofstripsofsomethingflutteringfromthemlikethedressesinaballet,butofcoursetherewerepetticoatsunderthem. 

           ThestrangestfigureswesawweretheSlovaks,whoweremorebarbarianthantherest,withtheirbigcow-boyhats,greatbaggydirty-whitetrousers,whitelinenshirts,andenormousheavyleatherbelts,nearlyafootwide,allstuddedoverwithbrassnails. Theyworehighboots,withtheirtrouserstuckedintothem,andhadlongblackhairandheavyblackmoustaches.
