Therewasnooneinthekitchenorintheservants’rooms,whichwerecloseathand. Wetriedalltheroomsaswewentalong,andinthediningroom,dimlylitbyraysoflightthroughtheshutters,foundfourservantwomenlyingonthefloor. Therewasnoneedtothinkthemdead,fortheirstertorousbreathingandtheacridsmelloflaudanumintheroomleftnodoubtastotheircondition.
