           Itmadeherverysadtoknowthatthiswassososadtoseeitthatsometimeswhenhesatidlyby,smilingandnoddingtoherwhenshelookedround,orwhenhecaressedsomelittlechildandcarriedittoandfro,ashewasfondofdoingbythehourtogether,perplexedbyitssimplequestions,yetpatientunderhisowninfirmity,andseemingalmostconsciousofittoo,andhumbledevenbeforethemindofaninfantsosaditmadehertoseehimthus,thatshewouldburstintotears,and,withdrawingintosomesecretplace,falldownuponherkneesandpraythathemightberestored.

           But,thebitternessofhergriefwasnotinbeholdinghiminthiscondition,whenhewasatleastcontentandtranquil,norinhersolitarymeditationsonhisalteredstate,thoughtheseweretrialsforayoungheart.Causefordeeperandheaviersorrowwasyettocome.

           Oneevening,aholidaynightwiththem,Nellandhergrandfatherwentouttowalk.Theyhadbeenrathercloselyconfinedforsomedays,andtheweatherbeingwarm,theystrolledalongdistance.Clearofthetown,theytookafootpathwhichstruckthroughsomepleasantfields,judgingthatitwouldterminateintheroadtheyquittedandenablethemtoreturnthatway.Itmade,however,amuchwidercircuitthantheyhadsupposed,andthustheyweretemptedonwarduntilsunset,whentheyreachedthetrackofwhichtheywereinsearch,andstoppedtorest.
