           Atlength,thecrisisoftheoldman’sdisorderwaspast,andhebegantomend.Byveryslowandfeebledegreeshisconsciousnesscameback;butthemindwasweakenedanditsfunctionswereimpaired.Hewaspatient,andquiet;oftensatbrooding,butnotdespondently,foralongspace;waseasilyamused,evenbyasun-beamonthewallorceiling;madenocomplaintthatthedayswerelong,orthenightstedious;andappearedindeedtohavelostallcountoftime,andeverysenseofcareorweariness.Hewouldsit,forhourstogether,withNell’ssmallhandinhis,playingwiththefingersandstoppingsometimestosmoothherhairorkissherbrow;and,whenhesawthattearswereglisteninginhereyes,wouldlook,amazed,abouthimforthecause,andforgethiswonderevenwhilehelooked.
