Inoneofthosewanderingsintheeveningtime,when,followingthetwosistersatahumbledistance,shefelt,inhersympathywiththemandherrecognitionintheirtrialsofsomethingakintoherownlonelinessofspirit,acomfortandconsolationwhichmadesuchmomentsatimeofdeepdelight,thoughthesoftenedpleasuretheyyieldedwasofthatkindwhichlivesanddiesintears—inoneofthosewanderingsatthequiethouroftwilight,whensky,andearth,andair,andripplingwater,andsoundofdistantbells,claimedkindredwiththeemotionsofthesolitarychild,andinspiredherwithsoothingthoughts,butnotofachild’sworldoritseasyjoys—inoneofthoserambleswhichhadnowbecomeheronlypleasureorrelieffromcare,lighthadfadedintodarknessandeveningdeepenedintonight,andstilltheyoungcreaturelingeredinthegloom;feelingacompanionshipinNaturesosereneandstill,whennoiseoftonguesandglareofgarishlightswouldhavebeensolitudeindeed.
Thesistershadgonehome,andshewasalone.Sheraisedhereyestothebrightstars,lookingdownsomildlyfromthewideworldsofair,and,gazingonthem,foundnewstarsburstuponherview,andmorebeyond,andmorebeyondagain,untilthewholegreatexpansesparkledwithshiningspheres,risinghigherandhigherinimmeasurablespace,eternalintheirnumbersasintheirchangelessandincorruptibleexistence.
