           AsitwasveryeasyforKittopersuadehimselfthattheoldhousewasinhisway,hiswaybeinganywhere,hetriedtolookuponhispassingitoncemoreasamatterofimperativeanddisagreeablenecessity,quiteapartfromanydesireofhisown,towhichhecouldnotchoosebutyield.ItisnotuncommonforpeoplewhoaremuchbetterfedandtaughtthanChristopherNubbleshadeverbeen,tomakedutiesoftheirinclinationsinmattersofmoredoubtfulpropriety,andtotakegreatcreditfortheself-denialwithwhichtheygratifythemselves.

           Therewasnoneedofanycautionthistime,andnofearofbeingdetainedbyhavingtoplayoutareturnmatchwithDanielQuilp’sboy.Theplacewasentirelydeserted,andlookedasdustyanddingyasifithadbeensoformonths.Arustypadlockwasfastenedonthedoor,endsofdiscolouredblindsandcurtainsflappeddrearilyagainstthehalf-openedupperwindows,andthecrookedholescutintheclosedshuttersbelow,wereblackwiththedarknessoftheinside.Someoftheglassinthewindowhehadsooftenwatched,hadbeenbrokenintheroughhurryofthemorning,andthatroomlookedmoredesertedanddullthanany.Agroupofidleurchinshadtakenpossessionofthedoor-steps;somewereplyingtheknockerandlisteningwithdelighteddreadtothehollowsoundsitspreadthroughthedismantledhouse;otherswereclusteredaboutthekeyhole,watchinghalfinjestandhalfinearnestfor‘theghost,’whichanhour’sgloom,addedtothemysterythathungaboutthelateinhabitants,hadalreadyraised.
