           Unconsciousoftheproceedingsfaithfullynarratedinthelastchapter,andlittledreamingoftheminewhichhadbeensprungbeneathhim(for,totheendthatheshouldhavenowarningofthebusinessa-foot,theprofoundestsecrecywasobservedinthewholetransaction),MrQuilpremainedshutupinhishermitage,undisturbedbyanysuspicion,andextremelywellsatisfiedwiththeresultofhismachinations.Beingengagedintheadjustmentofsomeaccountsanoccupationtowhichthesilenceandsolitudeofhisretreatwereveryfavourablehehadnotstrayedfromhisdenfortwowholedays.Thethirddayofhisdevotiontothispursuitfoundhimstillhardatwork,andlittledisposedtostirabroad.

           ItwasthedaynextafterMrBrass’sconfession,andconsequently,thatwhichthreatenedtherestrictionofMrQuilp’sliberty,andtheabruptcommunicationtohimofsomeveryunpleasantandunwelcomefacts.Havingnointuitiveperceptionofthecloudwhichlowereduponhishouse,thedwarfwasinhisordinarystateofcheerfulness;and,whenhefoundhewasbecomingtoomuchengrossedbybusinesswithadueregardtohishealthandspirits,hevarieditsmonotonousroutinewithalittlescreeching,orhowling,orsomeotherinnocentrelaxationofthatnature.

           Hewasattended,asusual,byTomScott,whosatcrouchingoverthefireafterthemannerofatoad,and,fromtimetotime,whenhismaster’sbackwasturned,imitatinghisgrimaceswithafearfulexactness.Thefigure-headhadnotyetdisappeared,butremainedinitsoldplace.
