Asthesinglegentlemanaftersomeweeks’occupationofhislodgings,stilldeclinedtocorrespond,bywordorgesture,eitherwithMrBrassorhissisterSally,butinvariablychoseRichardSwivellerashischannelofcommunication;andasheprovedhimselfinallrespectsahighlydesirableinmate,payingforeverythingbeforehand,givingverylittletrouble,makingnonoise,andkeepingearlyhours;MrRichardimperceptiblyrosetoanimportantpositioninthefamily,asonewhohadinfluenceoverthismysteriouslodger,andcouldnegotiatewithhim,forgoodorevil,whennobodyelsedurstapproachhisperson.
Ifthetruthmustbetold,evenMrSwiveller’sapproachestothesinglegentlemanwereofaverydistantkind,andmetwithsmallencouragement;but,asheneverreturnedfromamonosyllabicconferencewiththeunknown,withoutquotingsuchexpressionsas‘Swiveller,IknowIcanrelyuponyou,’—‘Ihavenohesitationinsaying,Swiveller,thatIentertainaregardforyou,’—‘Swiveller,youaremyfriend,andwillstandbymeIamsure,’withmanyothershortspeechesofthesamefamiliarandconfidingkind,purportingtohavebeenaddressedbythesinglegentlemantohimself,andtoformthestapleoftheirordinarydiscourse,neitherMrBrassnorMissSallyforamomentquestionedtheextentofhisinfluence,butaccordedtohimtheirfullestandmostunqualifiedbelief.
Butquiteapartfrom,andindependentof,thissourceofpopularity,MrSwivellerhadanother,whichpromisedtobeequallyenduring,andtolightenhispositionconsiderably.
