Almostbroken-hearted,Nellwithdrewwiththeschoolmasterfromthebedsideandreturnedtohiscottage.Inthemidstofhergriefandtearsshewasyetcarefultoconcealtheirrealcausefromtheoldman,forthedeadboyhadbeenagrandchild,andleftbutoneagedrelativetomournhisprematuredecay.
Shestoleawaytobedasquicklyasshecould,andwhenshewasalone,gavefreeventtothesorrowwithwhichherbreastwasovercharged.Butthesadsceneshehadwitnessed,wasnotwithoutitslessonofcontentandgratitude;ofcontentwiththelotwhichleftherhealthandfreedom;andgratitudethatshewassparedtotheonerelativeandfriendsheloved,andtoliveandmoveinabeautifulworld,whensomanyyoungcreatures—asyoungandfullofhopeasshe—werestrickendownandgatheredtotheirgraves.Howmanyofthemoundsinthatoldchurchyardwhereshehadlatelystrayed,grewgreenabovethegravesofchildren!Andthoughshethoughtasachildherself,anddidnotperhapssufficientlyconsidertowhatabrightandhappyexistencethosewhodieyoungareborne,andhowindeaththeylosethepainofseeingothersdiearoundthem,bearingtothetombsomestrongaffectionoftheirhearts(whichmakestheolddiemanytimesinonelonglife),stillshethoughtwiselyenough,todrawaplainandeasymoralfromwhatshehadseenthatnight,andtostoreit,deepinhermind.
