           Kit’smothermighthavesparedherselfthetroubleoflookingbacksooften,fornothingwasfurtherfromMrQuilp’sthoughtsthananyintentionofpursuingherandherson,orrenewingthequarrelwithwhichtheyhadparted.Hewenthisway,whistlingfromtimetotimesomefragmentsofatune;andwithafacequitetranquilandcomposed,joggedpleasantlytowardshome;entertaininghimselfashewentwithvisionsofthefearsandterrorsofMrsQuilp,who,havingreceivednointelligenceofhimforthreewholedaysandtwonights,andhavinghadnopreviousnoticeofhisabsence,wasdoubtlessbythattimeinastateofdistraction,andconstantlyfaintingawaywithanxietyandgrief.

           Thisfacetiousprobabilitywassocongenialtothedwarf’shumour,andsoexquisitelyamusingtohim,thathelaughedashewentalonguntilthetearsrandownhischeeks;andmorethanonce,whenhefoundhimselfinabye-street,ventedhisdelightinashrillscream,whichgreatlyterrifyinganylonelypassenger,whohappenedtobewalkingonbeforehimexpectingnothingsolittle,increasedhismirth,andmadehimremarkablycheerfulandlight-hearted.

           Inthishappyflowofspirits,MrQuilpreachedTowerHill,when,gazingupatthewindowofhisownsitting-room,hethoughthedescriedmorelightthanisusualinahouseofmourning.Drawingnearer,andlisteningattentively,hecouldhearseveralvoicesinearnestconversation,amongwhichhecoulddistinguish,notonlythoseofhiswifeandmother-in-law,butthetonguesofmen.
