Businessdisposedof,MrSwivellerwasinwardlyremindedofitsbeingnighdinner-time,andtotheintentthathishealthmightnotbeendangeredbylongerabstinence,dispatchedamessagetothenearesteating-houserequiringanimmediatesupplyofboiledbeefandgreensfortwo.Withthisdemand,however,theeating-house(havingexperienceofitscustomer)declinedtocomply,churlishlysendingbackforanswerthatifMrSwivellerstoodinneedofbeefperhapshewouldbesoobligingastocomethereandeatit,bringingwithhim,asgracebeforemeat,theamountofacertainsmallaccountwhichhadlongbeenoutstanding.Notatallintimidatedbythisrebuff,butrathersharpenedinwitsandappetite,MrSwivellerforwardedthesamemessagetoanotherandmoredistanteating-house,addingtoitbywayofriderthatthegentlemanwasinducedtosendsofar,notonlybythegreatfameandpopularityitsbeefhadacquired,butinconsequenceoftheextremetoughnessofthebeefretailedattheobdurantcook’sshop,whichrendereditquiteunfitnotmerelyforgentlemanlyfood,butforanyhumanconsumption.Thegoodeffectofthispoliticcoursewasdemonstratedbythespeedyarrivalofasmallpewterpyramid,curiouslyconstructedofplattersandcovers,whereoftheboiled-beef-platesformedthebase,andafoamingquart-pottheapex;thestructurebeingresolvedintoitscomponentpartsaffordedallthingsrequisiteandnecessaryforaheartymeal,towhichMrSwivellerandhisfriendappliedthemselveswithgreatkeennessandenjoyment.
