           Daybroke,andfoundthemstillupontheirway.Sinceleavinghome,theyhadhaltedhereandtherefornecessaryrefreshment,andhadfrequentlybeendelayed,especiallyinthenighttime,bywaitingforfreshhorses.Theyhadmadenootherstoppages,buttheweathercontinuedrough,andtheroadswereoftensteepandheavy.Itwouldbenightagainbeforetheyreachedtheirplaceofdestination.

           Kit,allbluffandhardenedwiththecold,wentonmanfully;and,havingenoughtodotokeephisbloodcirculating,topicturetohimselfthehappyendofthisadventurousjourney,andtolookabouthimandbeamazedateverything,hadlittlesparetimeforthinkingofdiscomforts.Thoughhisimpatience,andthatofhisfellow-travellers,rapidlyincreasedasthedaywaned,thehoursdidnotstandstill.Theshortdaylightofwintersoonfadedaway,anditwasdarkagainwhentheyhadyetmanymilestotravel.

           Asitgrewdusk,thewindfell;itsdistantmoaningsweremorelowandmournful;and,asitcamecreepinguptheroad,andrattlingcovertlyamongthedrybramblesoneitherhand,itseemedlikesomegreatphantomforwhomthewaywasnarrow,whosegarmentsrustledasitstalkedalong.Bydegreesitlulledanddiedaway,andthenitcameontosnow.

           Theflakesfellfastandthick,sooncoveringthegroundsomeinchesdeep,andspreadingabroadasolemnstillness.Therollingwheelswerenoiseless,andthesharpringandclatterofthehorses’hoofs,becameadull,muffledtramp.Thelifeoftheirprogressseemedtobeslowlyhushed,andsomethingdeath-liketousurpitsplace.
