           Thethrongofpeoplehurriedby,intwooppositestreams,withnosymptomofcessationorexhaustion;intentupontheirownaffairs;andundisturbedintheirbusinessspeculations,bytheroarofcartsandwaggonsladenwithclashingwares,theslippingofhorses’feetuponthewetandgreasypavement,therattlingoftherainonwindowsandumbrella-tops,thejostlingofthemoreimpatientpassengers,andallthenoiseandtumultofacrowdedstreetinthehightideofitsoccupation:whilethetwopoorstrangers,stunnedandbewilderedbythehurrytheybeheldbuthadnopartin,lookedmournfullyon;feeling,amidstthecrowd,asolitudewhichhasnoparallelbutinthethirstoftheshipwreckedmariner,who,tosttoandfrouponthebillowsofamightyocean,hisredeyesblindedbylookingonthewaterwhichhemshiminoneveryside,hasnotonedroptocoolhisburningtongue.

           Theywithdrewintoalowarchwayforshelterfromtherain,andwatchedthefacesofthosewhopassed,tofindinoneamongthemarayofencouragementorhope.Somefrowned,somesmiled,somemutteredtothemselves,somemadeslightgestures,asifanticipatingtheconversationinwhichtheywouldshortlybeengaged,someworethecunninglookofbargainingandplotting,somewereanxiousandeager,someslowanddull;insomecountenances,werewrittengain;inothers,loss.Itwaslikebeingintheconfidenceofallthesepeopletostandquietlythere,lookingintotheirfacesastheyflittedpast.
